* The main work of the italian satirist Pietro Aretino (1492-1556), born in Arezzo, studied literature and painting, went to Rome and became a protegé of Pope Leo X and Clement VII (to 1525), and later Giovanni de'Medici (1525-27) and settled in Venice (1527). Known especially for satirical attacks on powerful contemporaries, giving him the nickname "Scourge of Princes". "Ragionamenti" are dialogues between a mother and a daughter who is taught the alternatives for women included how to be a good and efficiant curtisane. The book was first issued in 1538. This edition is according to Brunet and Willems, a rear Elzevir-print probably from the hand of Jean Elzevier (d. 1661). "Edition la plus belle et la plus recherchée de ce recuil ..." (Brunet I, 412). It is one of two editions from the same year; this one without the "La puttana errante ..."(38 pp.). (See also: Graesse I, 190f and Willems 858). A rare, nicely restored contemporary copy of a rare and early "erotic" book!.
